reel

The screen recorder that films like a camera operator.

Hit record and work. The frame follows your pointer, gestures zoom the shot, clicks ripple, your camera rides in a circle. Stop, and the movie's done.

reel runs on a Mac. Send yourself the link and download it there.

What it is

  • A one-take demo camera: the viewport follows your pointer, so the recording always looks where you're working.
  • Live direction — zoom and reframe mid-take with trackpad gestures; the easing is rendered straight into the movie.
  • Click ripples and drag highlights, drawn into the file, so viewers see exactly what you pressed.
  • Webcam picture-in-picture, cropped to a circle (or square it off) with its own device picker.
  • System sound and mic captured as separate audio tracks — mix or mute them later without re-recording.
  • Set a region once and every take frames exactly that slice of screen, zoom included.
  • Finished takes land in ~/Movies/reel, or any folder you pick from the menu. Turn on save to waveloop cloud and they go to iCloud Drive/waveloop/reels instead — on all your machines by the time you switch chairs.
  • The rec-red marquee shows you what's captured, and never appears in the recording.

How to drive it

  • 3-finger spread / pinch — zoom in / out, centred on your pointer.
  • 3-finger move — pan the frame off the pointer; zoom out and it eases back.
  • ⌥ pinch / ⌥ scroll — the same camera, two fingers at a time.
  • fn + right-click — options popup right at the cursor, mid-take.
  • ⌃⌥⌘R — start / stop from anywhere; a one-click stop button also appears in the menu bar while rolling.
  • Siri — "start recording in reel" / "stop recording in reel"; the same actions live in Shortcuts, plus reel://record and reel://stop for scripts.

What it isn't

Not an editor. No timeline, no render queue — the take is directed while it happens.

Privacy

Local. No accounts, no telemetry. Screen, camera, mic go one place: the movie, on your disk and your iCloud.

Your next demo films itself.
