layerz

Your voice. Your mic. Your loop.

Sing, beatbox or capture the sounds around you. The first take becomes your loop. Record another layer, then another — build the whole thing from your mic.

layerz runs on a Windows PC. Send yourself the link and download it there.

iPhone and iPad $4.99 · the Mac version is free and hosts AUv3 plugins · free on Windows too

What it is

  • Start with your microphone: a voice, a rhythm, or a sound from the room.
  • The first take sets the loop length. Every take after it layers on top — hold to drop in, or latch it and keep playing.
  • A tape-deck transport: play forward, stop, or play the whole thing backwards, and keep layering either way.
  • An FX rack of two slots with A/B patches, crossfaded on an XY pad: across for the patch, down for wet and dry.
  • Plugins: AUv3 effects on iPhone and iPad; on Windows, 64-bit VST2 effects in the rack and instruments you can play from the on-screen keyboard or your computer keys.
  • Gain lives on the input meter: drag the meter itself to set it, and set the noise gate right there too.
  • Export the loop as a WAV, or load one in to layer over.

“Windows protected your PC”?

The first time, Windows SmartScreen may stop it. The app isn't signed with a paid code-signing certificate yet, so Windows doesn't recognise the publisher. Click More info, then Run anyway. You only do this once.

To check you have the file we published first, open PowerShell in the unzipped folder and run Get-FileHash .\layerz.exe. It should print:

c1663712dfaa4f3ef201e406f525ec60c546f6cc9345e0d3c47bb05799285d9c

The zip itself:

Settings live in %APPDATA%\WaveLoop and audio in your Music folder, so the app can run from anywhere, even straight out of the zip. It stays off the network unless you switch BROADCAST on; then it plays to your own network only.

Privacy

Your audio stays on your device. No accounts, no telemetry.
